REAL SALARY INCREASES FOR TEACHERS

OVER the years, several aspects of the Teaching Profession have been changed to allow for advancement at various levels. A built-in incentive scheme was introduced into the salary structure of teachers, so that they could upgrade their qualifications and earn higher salaries.

Increases were made across the board and for teachers at the lower end of the salary scale, who are unqualified, consistent efforts have been made to upgrade their income. The increases in 2003 ranged from five percent to 15 percent.

For non-administrative staff, the salary scale in 1985 for an acting teacher (AT) was about US$10 per month, while in 2002 it was increased to US$25 per month and in the same year it was further enhanced to US$110 per month.

Temporary Qualified Masters 111, received just above US$10 per month in 1985 which was increased to US$30 per month in 1992, and in 2002 it was US$125.

Graduate Senior Assistant Masters 1 (SAM) received US$60 per month in 1985, while in 1992 they received US$75 and in 2002 the amount increased to nearly US$250 per month.

Graduate Senior Assistant Masters 11 (SAM) were given nearly US$75 per month in 1985, while they received US$90 per month in 1992 and nearly US$350 per month in 2002.

Administrative staff also received significant increases across the board.

Graduate Senior Masters 1 received about US$40 per month in 1985, while the amount was increased to US$50 per month in 1992 and further increased to nearly US$300 per month in 2002.

In 1985 Deputy Head masters 2b received approximately US$75 in 1992 and nearly US$400 in 2002.

For Deputy Head Masters 2a, the amount received in 1985 was about US$60 and was increased to nearly US$90 in 1992 and just over US$400 in 2002.

During the last two years the Government has made available $140M to increase the salaries of unqualified teachers.
