THE youth arm of the People's Progressive Party (PPP), the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO), has expressed deep concern about the current strike by teachers.

In a statement yesterday, it said teachers may have legitimate concerns but they have a responsibility to exercise good judgement and avoid being misled by the Guyana Teachers' Union (GTU) leadership "which appears to be politically inspired".

"It is unacceptable for anyone to net teachers as part of their plot to engineer a crisis," the PYO charged.

"Teachers have undoubtedly worked hard over the years and in recognition of their contribution to the education sector received increases in salary and other emoluments. This in no way is to say there is no room for further advancement, but in bargaining, reality must be a consideration for demands and positions," the PYO urged.

The youth movement observed that the current industrial action is placing the future of students at risk at a time when they have imminent examinations.

"For the sake of the students and to save the worry by parents, the teachers should have a conscious call to reflect on their action, particularly at this time and in light of the current circumstances," the PYO appealed.

Noting the upward mobility and improved working and housing conditions of teachers, the PYO said there has been no indication that there has been a closure on improving and expanding education in the society, therefore teachers should impress on the union to seize on the Government's willingness and enthusiasm to take education to greater heights.
