Both Constables Gerald Alonzo, 28, of Wismar, Linden and 27-year-old Mahendra Baijnauth, of La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara, charged with the March 1 murder, were remanded to prison.
Baijnauth alone faced another charge for the attempted murder of Ronson Grey, 19, one of the other youths in the car with Douglas and still recovering from a gunshot injury.
Attorneys-at-law Mr. Compton Richardson and Mr. Hookumchand represented Alonzo and Baijnauth, respectively and the preliminary inquiry into the charges was scheduled to start on April 1.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Sanjeev Datadin in a reaction said that the Director of Public Prosecutions must be fair and impartial at all times as the constitutional officer charged with the institution of criminal proceedings in all instances in the State of Guyana.
He said it was unfortunate that the recommendations of the Police inquiry into the matter were not followed. He said that to the best of his knowledge, the Police inquiry recommended that one of the Policemen be charged with murder and the other with attempted murder.
However, he said the DPP had instructed that both men be charged with murder.
Datadin said he was saddened that such a decision was made having regard to the circumstances of the matter and especially when the DPP had consented to an alleged cop killer pleading guilty to manslaughter and receiving a term of imprisonment.
He argued that such inconsistencies only served to weaken the judicial process.
He, however, noted that the DPP's power was absolute and had to be respected.
