THE two policemen charged with the March 1 murder of 17-year-old University of Guyana (UG) student Yohance Douglas made their second Court appearance yesterday and were further remanded to prison, until April 22, by Acting Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen.

Gerald Alonzo and Mahendra Baijnauth were greeted with shouts of “murderers” and other remarks from a small crowd gathered in the courtyard and, as the accused sat in the dock, waiting for the magistrate to assume the Bench, a woman entered the courtroom carrying a picture of the slain youth on a cross.

The demonstrator then hurled abuse at the two cops, one of whom, Baijnauth faces another charge of attempting to kill Ronson Grey, who was shot in the jaw while travelling in the same car with Douglas on Sheriff Street, Campbellville, Georgetown.

Police Inspector Gordon Peters, for the Prosecution, disclosed that counsel from the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) will be named to prosecute in the case within the next two weeks.

Among others present in the packed courtroom yesterday was President of UG Students Society (UGSS), Mr. Robert Bourne and the victim’s mother, Ms Aslyn Douglas, who burst into tears during the brief proceedings and had to be consoled.

The throng of spectators later followed the remanded prisoners, still hurling abuse at them, as they were led out of the Court precincts.

Baijnauth and Alonzo were prosecuted after a public outcry over the killing of Douglas and injuring of two of his other companions in the bizarre shooting incident.
