The vessel arrived in Linden on Tuesday of last week and was berthed at the Aluminum Mine Wharf. Hundreds of Lindeners and residents from neighbouring communities were taken aboard the Flagship to experience and become familiar with the operations of the vessel, a GDF release said.
Speaking on behalf of Linden residents and the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Regional Chairman Mr. Mortimer Mingo expressed appreciation of the GDF and the role the Coast Guard is playing in protecting Guyana's territorial waters.
"On behalf of the residents and Councillors of Linden and on my own behalf, I wish you, Commander Floyd Levi and your crew, a warm welcome to our town. I would like you to know that we in this region are supportive of the GDF in general and of the Coast Guard in particular...we appreciate all that the Coast Guard is doing for the protection and preservation of Guyana's territorial integrity and also enhancing the economic development of our country by ensuring our vital marine resources remain where they are for all Guyanese," Mr. Mingo declared.
Among the hundreds of children and adults who toured the vessel was a group from the Linden Golden Age Club. Commander Levi entertained this particular group aboard the ship.
Members of the Engineering Corps of the flagship visited the Linden Power Station where they had a firsthand view of the electricity distribution system throughout the township. They also learnt of some of the constraints that are affecting power supply there.
A reception was also held aboard the vessel for the Regional Chairman and functionaries of the Regional Administration and several distinguished members of the community.
The GDFS Essequibo began its Port calls on Monday, March 3 and concluded the exercise last Friday, the GDF said.
