When Prime Minister Sam Hinds visited the Region last Thursday, Omai’s Human Resource Director, Norman Mc Lean said the mine was forced to send off some 500 workers primarily from Linden as a result of the dug-up Mabura road.
Omai built that road, but as part of their protest action in response to prolonged power outage caused by the failed privately-owned Linden Power Company (LPC), Lindeners blocked vehicular traffic, including Omai’s tankers from transporting fuel and other supplies into the mining camp.
On Friday, President Bharrat Jagdeo visited Linden in keeping with his earlier promise to meet with concerned residents, and he informed them about the Administration’s continued efforts at providing short and medium term solutions to the power situation.
To this end, an additional Caterpillar generator was expected to be transported to Linden yesterday afternoon to supplement the power generation in Linden, the President assured the mining community.
The Head of State also unveiled investment plans by Omai Gold Mines, which will see the availability of the steady supply of 9 megawatts of electricity in the region by July.
President Jagdeo has indicated that he will pay a return visit to Linden, next Tuesday, as Government continues to monitor the power situation. (GOVERNMENT INFORMATION AGENCY - GINA)
