Additional benabs will be constructed, a second access road to the beach will be graded, some areas will be de-bushed without harming the environment, and garbage will be removed, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Mr. Manzoor Nadir said during the Budget debate in Parliament last week.
“Our programme for the 63 Beach commenced two years ago, with the repairs to the road and with the construction of a number of benabs. When persons go to the beach they can enjoy cool and comfort, as they engage in recreational and leisurely activities,” the Minister said.
He added that more physical development at the 63 Beach will continue this year, private sector partnerships to build and manage accommodation will be invited.
Highlighting some of the activities in his Ministry, the Minister said “last year works were completed at the Bartica Regatta site. For this year’s regatta, patrons will enjoy modern sanitation facilities, a good main pavilion, the pageant area and we built a new stand at the site.”
“We are going to be completing our work on the Lethem Rodeo site. What has been done in the past, despite Government’s scarce resources and having to do things incrementally and not in one shot, we have built the stands, and last year, we completed permanent exhibition booths. We also contributed to the whole construction of the coral and the entire area,” said Minister Nadir.
He said: “This year, we want to run the electricity to the site. I understand that this is on the cards for April 20, rodeo time. This means that they will have 24 hours power at the Lethem Rodeo Site. Those who had traditionally conducted commercial activities at the site, had to walk with their own standbys, but this year, we are going to complete the running of the electricity from the Moco Moco Hydro to the Rodeo Site. We expect that the Lethem Rodeo Site will serve the needs of that community for a few years to come.”
He revealed that plans are in place for the building of a tourism zone from the Bank of Guyana to the Pegasus Hotel to the Kitty Pump Station. That area, he said, will have proper lighting and receptacles for garbage. The area will also be regularly cleaned.
He explained that the tourism zone will allow people who visit Guyana to have a specific area in the City that they can go to, feel safe, relax, and enjoy what the country has to offer in a safe, clean, welcoming environment.
The Minister said an advertisement had been placed in the media inviting designs for recreation and leisure facilities between the areas of Camp Street and the Kitty Pump Station. He pointed out that $12 million is allocated for these developments. (GINA)
