LEEWARD Islands off-spinner Omari Banks is set to make his Test debut in the second Cable & Wireless Test versus Australia, starting at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on Saturday.

Banks, who took 25 at wickets at 36.40 each in the inaugural 2003 Carib Beer Series tournament, also represented the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Carib Beer XI in the three-day match versus the visitors at the Everest Cricket Club ground, picking up three wickets in the second innings.

As expected, new vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan has regained full fitness to his injured finger and has taken his place in the provisional 15-member squad.

There’s still no place for hard-hitting left-handed Jamaican opener Chris Gayle who failed to make the first Test squad among much controversy, following his participation in the Double Wicket tournament in St Lucia where he partnered sacked West Indies captain, Carl Hooper.

Skipper Brian Lara had however allayed any speculation that Gayle was dropped for his part in the St Lucia competition, pointing out that the selectors had opted for the best 13 players.

According to a release from the WICB, the squad has been increased to 15 to cover for wicketkeeper/batsman Ridley Jacobs, who suffered a tear of the rexus femourus during the opening Cable & Wireless Test Match at Bourda.

The release pointed out that team management has arranged for Dr Terry Ally, a member of the West Indies Cricket Board’s medical panel, to examine Jacobs when the team arrives in Port of Spain today for a second opinion on the severity of his injury.

Following the submission of Dr Ali’s report, the final 14-member squad will be decided.

Squad: Brian Lara (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice-captain), Omari Banks, Carlton Baugh Jr, David Bernard Jr, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Pedro Collins, Mervyn Dillon, Vasbert Drakes, Daren Ganga, Wavell Hinds, Ridley Jacobs, Jermaine Lawson, Marlon Samuels, Devon Smith.
