MINISTER of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy has said the Government of Guyana and, more importantly, his ministry is still taking all precautionary measures to deal with the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

He told a press conference in the Ministry of Health boardroom, on Brickdam, Georgetown, that this country has to be especially careful when receiving visitors from countries where fatalities have occurred.

Ramsammy said the situation is being monitored and there are daily meetings and procedures to determine if need exists for re-evaluating the system in place.

He said, if any person in this country is found with the disease, then it will be a sign that the process has to be reviewed.

Minister Ramsammy said, like in any other place, persons who enter Guyana on flights that passed through affected countries will be given a green card and that would make them aware of what should be done if they encounter problems in relation to SARS.

He said persons who show signs of being infected with the disease are screened and referred to medical clinics and a special section of Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation has been identified for such patients, to avoid them spreading the infection to staff, too.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry is educating all doctors and health care workers about how to identify persons who might not have visible signs of the affliction.

Ramsammy said the treatment to lessen the severity of the sickness at this time is the administration of steroids and glucose.

But no Guyanese has yet been diagnosed with the illness that has claimed 160 lives in China, Canada and United States.
