Speaking at his weekly news conference last Thursday, the HPS said the Office of the President has begun interviews to select the second batch of students, which will number between 70 and 80 candidates. This, he said is in addition to 20 students who have already been awarded scholarship to study medicine and should have already travelled to Cuba. Their departure has been held back until September so that all the successful candidates could travel together.
According to Dr. Luncheon, the students will pursue studies at Cuban institutions in several fields including human medicine, dentistry, agriculture, engineering, sports and culture, and health sciences.
The Cuban government awarded 350 scholarships to Guyana during President Bharrat Jagdeo’s visit to Cuba in 2001. The scholarships are to be utililised over a three-year period.
The first batch of 124 students which left for the 2002-2003 academic year are presently in Cuba studying Spanish before proceeding to academic studies.
