THE newly- appointed Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Cane Field- Enterprise Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) has pledged to effectively manage the welfare of residents and hasten the pace of development.

The IMC replaced the previous body which was disbanded by the Ministry of Local Government, following numerous complaints from taxpayers over the lack of consultation in the decision making process and the ineffectiveness of the Council to address complaints.

Residents also expressed concern about the Local Authority not prioritising development projects.

People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Member of Parliament, Zulfiker Mustapha said residents also petitioned the NDC, calling for a removal of the previous administrative body.

An investigation into the matter was launched by the Ministry of Local Government and according to Mustapha, the findings revealed numerous concerns and also recommended the council be disbanded an Interim management Committee (IMC) to be appointed to effective manage the community welfare.

The IMC, a ten-member broad- based committee comprise representative from a cross-section of the community, including the public and private sector, was installed when Minister within the Local Government Ministry Mr. Clinton Collymore, Region Six Vice Chairman Mr. Kadim Bacchus and Parliamentarian Zulfikar Mustapha visited the area recently and held consultation with residents.

Mustapha said too that the Mida- Tarlogie NDC, another East Berbice Local Authority will be managed by an IMC.

He noted that the high level of absenteeism at council’s statutory meetings have led to the lack of a quorum and is severely affecting the local administration.

Region Six, East Berbice Corentyne has 16 NDCs.
