Prime Minister Sam Hinds, currently performing the duties of President, joined Muslims in their celebration at the Peter's Hall Mosque on the East Bank Demerara.
The Prime Minister, addressing the large gathering, noted Islam's example to all mankind.
The important message of Islam is the oneness of mankind in spite of all the physical differences, he observed, adding that this is necessary to forge unity among Guyanese.
"I think that there is a more subtle and profound meaning in his teaching, that is in knowing all examples of mankind, we get to perceive mankind in total," Mr. Hinds said.
It is through the full range of humans that we perceive mankind of which each of us is an element, he asserted.
The teachings of Islam, Mr. Hinds said, brings a sense of equality among believers and a sense of responsibility to make themselves good citizens.
He urged those gathered at the mosque to let the message of Muhammad enable them to truly become testimonies of Guyana's motto 'One People, One Nation, One Destiny'.
"I think also that it should give us the faith that being no less than people in other countries, we too, through our efforts can build a prosperous country here," he said.
A better life for Guyanese is largely dependent on what people make of the available resource, the Prime Minister said.
He maintained that citizens have a major role to play in making their lives, that of their relatives and neighbours better.
"We in Guyana, of many religious faiths, have been learning to celebrate the festivals of each other with the hope and intention of increasing our cohesiveness and demonstrating how people of different religions may yet abide in the presence and alongside each other in strength and unity," he said.
