Blair and Lowe claim table tennis titles

TIFFANY Blair and Trenace Lowe have already claimed titles in the annual Independence table tennis championships that served off at the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Training Centre, National Park, yesterday.

Blair, competing along with two other entrants, won the Girls’ Under-11 title after defeating her two opponents. She put away Ambrose Thomas 11-6, 11-3, 12-10 and Geneanne Kellman 11-6, 11-7, 11-4.

Thomas took the second place after a gruelling match with Kellman, in which all five games were required -- 11-9, 6-11, 10-12, 11-7, 11-2.

The Boys’ Under-11 reached the final, in which the winners of the three groups will clash in a round robin affair on Thursday to decide the top places. The players are Keon Hestick, Zane Rogers and Carlos Oxford.

Lowe won the Girls’ Under-15 crown, emerging winner of a round robin affair among four players. Varsha Panday placed second, Delicia Cummings third and Blair fourth.

The highlight of the category was Panday upsetting Cummings 11-8, 8-11, 11-2, 9-11, 11-9.

Play in the Boys’ Under-15 competition reached the quarter-final stage, after round robin play in four groups of four competitors. Zach Gonsalves who won Group 1, will clash with Taffon Maddison, who placed second in Group 4, while Richard Hadmon, the runner-up of Group 3, will meet Group 2 winner Joslyn Crawford.

Group 2 second-placer Carlos Oxford will face Colwin Leitch, the winner of Group 3, and Orlando McEwan, who claimed the second slot in Group 1, take on Group 4 winner Anthony Niles.

Both the Boys’ Under-13 and the Girls’ Under-13 competitions reached the final. Keon Hestick will clash with Joslyn Crawford for top honours, while Sfeffon Kellman already claimed the third slot and Carlos Oxford ended fourth.

In the semifinals, Hestick beat Oxford, after dropping the first game 4-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-9, while Crawford put away Kellman 11-4, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7.

Varsha Panday and Trenace Lowe will play for the top position in the Girls’ Under-13, with the third place already going to Tiffany Blair and Geneann Kellman the fourth place.

In the Boys’ Under-9 category, Shaquyl Williams secured a place in the final, bouncing back after dropping the first two games to get past Travis Clements in a gruelling semifinal encounter 4-11, 13-15, 11-9, 11-7, 14-12.

The other semifinal will be between Zane Rogers and Trent Patterson, after the top two places were decided in two groups. Rogers won Group 1 and Clements placed second, while Williams won Group 2 and Patterson was the runner-up.

Semifinal action is fixed for Tuesday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and the finals on Thursday at the same venue.

Play in the championships continues today at the Training Centre with Under-17 competitors clashing from 10:00 hrs, then at 12:30 hrs, the ‘C’ class competition serves off.

The qualifying rounds for the Men’s and Women’s Singles begin at 15:00 hrs.
