THE teenaged girls nabbed Thursday at the Deobirana Street, Prashad Nagar, house where wanted fugitive Shawn Brown and accomplices Delon George and Tony Singh, called ‘Big Head’, were holed out, remain in Police custody, assisting with investigations into their involvement in criminal activities in which the trio were implicated.

Brown, George and Singh were killed during a shootout at the house with a joint Police/Army contingent.

The girls, whose ages were confirmed as 17 years and 19 years, and addresses given as Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and 38, Norton Street, Lodge, respectively, had told the police that they had just finished writing CXC Social Studies examinations, when a female friend requested they accompany her to a brother who recently returned from overseas.

They also reportedly claimed to be students of the YWCA in Brickdam. But General Secretary of that institution, Mrs. Glynis Alonzo-Beaton, yesterday refuted this claim. Mrs. Alonzo-Beaton explained that the YWCA accommodates only students between 14 years and 18 years - and not girls/women with child or children.

The 19-year-old girl has acknowledged having a child.

The YWCA official, in acknowledging that the institution served as a center for the writing of the CXC subject on Thursday, pointed out that it also served as a center for private students writing the examination.

Shawn Brown, 33, of 60 Pike Street, Kitty, one of the so-called ‘jailbreak five’ that knifed and shot their way out of the Camp Street jail on Mash Day last year, had wanted bulletins issued for him in Guyana and, earlier this week, in the United States.

The latter was issued a U.S. district court judge for the late fugitive’s involvement in the kidnapping of the U.S. Chief Security Officer, Steve Lesniak, on April 12 last at Lusignan.

The U.S. diplomat was subsequently released, but not before a substantial ransom was paid by his friends.

Delon George, 28, of 55 Hadfield Street, Lodge, was married to Brown’s sister and was the father of three children. He was acquitted on April 6 last for the murder of businessman Haraindra Nauth, called Ravi Nauth, at his gas station premises at Unity, Mahaica.

The third dead, Tony Singh, 23, of Independence Boulevard and 19, Princes Street, Lodge, was freed on July 31, 2002 for the murder of Troy Martin in 1998, a police release said yesterday.

According to the release, one Beratta sub-machine gun; 68 rounds of 7.62 x 39 ammunition; one 9 MM round of ammunition; one matching Beretta magazine; two AK47 magazines; two cellular phones; one artificial wig; one pair boots and one rocket launcher casing, were retrieved from the Prashad Nagar house.

The police said, too, there is evidence to support that at least three hand grenades, for which fragments are being analyzed, were thrown at the Police in their quest to apprehend the bandits.

Two policemen and one of the two girls were wounded during the shootout.

Meanwhile, searches are continuing in the area and investigations are on-going.
