THE Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions has now taken over the prosecuting at the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the charge surrounding the murder of University of Guyana (UG) student Yohance Douglas.

State Prosecutor Candace Raphael, in association with other State Counsel Jo-Ann Barlow, replaced Inspector Richard Lowe when the pre-trial proceedings resumed before Acting Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen yesterday.

In the dock were Police Constables Mahendra Baijnauth and Gerald Alonzo, who are charged with the fatal shooting of the victim in Sheriff Street, Georgetown last March 1.

Two witnesses, Police Corporals Simeon Reid and Eon Jackson, attached to Brickdam Police Station and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, respectively, gave depositions before the adjournment was taken to June 24.

Reid is to give further testimony and Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos, representing Baijnauth and other attorney-at-law Mr Compton Richardson, for Alonzo, said they would cross-examine him when he concludes his evidence-in-chief.

DeSantos requested Jackson to produce photocopies of his certificates from overseas training courses on the next occasion.

Previously, when Lowe represented the Prosecution, the first witness, Paul Broomes, uncle of the deceased, testified.

Another UG student, Ronson Gray was seriously injured by the March 1 Police gunfire and Baijnauth has been charged with that attempted murder.

The PI into that charge is continuing on June 25.
