TWO lawyers from the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) are now involved in the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the charge surrounding the murder of 14-year-old Raheem Abdool of the United Sad’r Islamic Anjuman orphanage in Alexander Street, Kitty.

State Counsel Simone Bullen and Paula Gilford appeared opposite Defence Counsel Vic Puran when the pre-trial proceedings continued before Senior Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday.

Nazeer Hamid, of Lot 51 Russell and Evans Streets, Charlestown and Yusuf Rahaman, of Lot 84 Garnett Street, Newtown, also in Georgetown, are charged with unlawfully killing the lad who was reported missing from the hostel between December 16 and 17, 2002.

One Prosecution witness, Police Detective Anandram Jagnandan was called yesterday before the adjournment was taken to June 27.

Hamid, who is Chief Executive Officer of the orphanage and Manager of Rahaman’s Spare Parts in the city and Rahaman, his employee, are alleged to have fatally beaten Abdool and dumped his partly decomposed body on Liliendaal railway embankment, East Coast Demerara.

Abdool’s was one of the newspaper headline grabbing murders when violent crime was still rampant in certain parts of the country earlier this year.
