‘Aridane & Other Stories’, an anthology of short fiction by local writer, Ruel Johnson, will be launched at 18:00 hours today at Castellani House, Homestretch Avenue, and Vlissengen Road.

After the launching, there will be a book sale and signing at Upscale Restaurant from 20:00 hours.

Ruel Johnson won the Guyana Prize for Fiction 2002 in the best First Book of Fiction category. His Anthology of Poems, “The Enormous Night” was also short listed for Best First Book of Poetry.

He was the first local resident to have two books short listed for an award in the same year, and also the first person to have two manuscripts up for an award in the same year. Johnson is also the youngest person so far to have won a Guyana Prize award.

The young author opted for a local (as opposed to overseas) publication of the book, in order to achieve a wide home readership. He believes that books published overseas are usually imported at prohibitive cost to the average Guyanese reader.

‘Ariadne & Other Stories’ has been published by the author in collaboration with Courts Guyana Inc. and Guyenterprise Advertising Agency. The author has been featured in the local press and in Caribbean Beat, BWIA’s inflight magazine (May/June 2003 issue).

He is one of the guest authors at the Caribbean Canadian Literary Expo (June 19-21) currently being held in Toronto, but he was expected to return to Guyana yesterday.
