THE Mothers in Black organization is strongly supporting the Guyana Police Force in sensitizing the public on the benefits of seatbelts and helmets.

In a recent “Lets Talk” programme, Ms. Denise Dias, one of the founder-members of MIB said the organization is emphasing the issue that seatbelts and helmets are important.

“It is so funny that unless it happen to you personally persons don’t feel the pain, so a $4, 000 or $6, 000 seatbelt can prevent loss, she remarked, adding, persons need to consider that they have to take care of themselves and passengers because life is irreplaceable.

According to her, MIB has undertaken a number of initiatives including meeting with Minister of Education, to encourage him to reintroduce the road safety patrol in schools.

Ms Dias noted that the MIB is willing to work with the Ministry to reinforce such an exercise and suggested that the road safety programme is on the Common Entrance curriculum.

Asked if the fines are appropriate for the offences, Ms Dias responded: “I think we need stiffer penalties then people would understand that we (MIB) and Police want to save lives,” said Ms Dias.

Meanwhile, a long-term goal for members of the MIB is to visit various schools and lecture to students on the use of road safety devices and the value of life.

Ms Dias, who commended the GPF for their cooperation in assisting the MIB, added that whenever the opportunity presents itself, members of the MIB would like to receive training from the GPF.

MIB which is currently observing its 3rd anniversary conducted a vigil outside of Parliament yesterday.

It has planned too, a `Drive with Care Camp’ on July 11 next starting at 16:00hrs from the Bandstand Seawall Road to Sparendaam Police Station and back.

Ms Dias explained that the exercise is to show drivers the correct speed limit, which is 30 miles per hour or 48 kilometers per hour.
