President of the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) Patrick Yarde says public servants must remind themselves of their need to serve.
In a year-end address to GPSU members, Yarde said: “Too many unmerited remarks have been made about the ineffectiveness of the public officers. Too much talk of unproductive attitudes. Even if it is a perception we must work towards correcting it. We must command the respect of those we serve by the virtue of the quality of our work and our attitude ...We must earn and maintain that respect. We must demand a fair day’s pay because we deliver a fair day’s work.”
He also described the 5% increase offered by the Government as “insensitive” and told members that they had to defend their union and their very existence against all possible forms of pressure.
But Yarde noted that as 2003 begins there seemed to be a glimmer of hope, referring to the public pledges of a new political culture as the nation bade farewell to former President Desmond Hoyte.
