Nyota Peters honoured by newly formed Linden Sports Foundation

Central American and Caribbean (C.A.C) bronze medalist Nyota Peters was honored for her achievement when she was presented with a gold brooch by Mayor of Linden Stan Smith at the launching of the Linden Sports Foundation on Sunday at Cuffy Square, Linden.
Peters won a bronze medal in the heptathlon at the CAC Games in El Salvador late last year.
The Sports Foundation is the brainchild of former world-rated athlete Aubrey “Skinny” Wilson, Charles Chester and Clinton Franklyn who are the directors of the foundation.
According to the directors, the main aim of the foundation is to bring back sports in the Linden community to the level it was in the 70’s and 80’s.
This, they said would be achieved by supporting and uplifting athletes and Clubs. Interested persons can become members of the foundation.
At the launching of the foundation, a number of sports activities were contested.
In the 3 1/2 miles road race from Christianburg to Jac’s restaurant the winner was Shawn Sandford in a time of 20 minutes and five seconds. Ryan Hanoy took second spot while Sigmund Daniels was third.
The first female to complete the race was Shonette Mc Farlene and she was followed by Abiola Cockfield and Collette Burnette.
The oldest male athlete to finish the race was Rudolph Webb while the youngest male athlete to finish was nine-year-old student of Christianburg Primary School Sylvester Freeman.
Mark Lewis with four prime prizes won the 40-mile cycle road race from Linden to Soweyo on the Linden Soesdyke highway and back.
He was followed by Cliff Thomas, Marlon Williams and Samuel Barker jr.
The under 15, five-a-side football competition was won by Kara Kara Flamingo who defended Silvertown All Stars 2-1 on penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw at full-time.
M.V.P of the tournament was Deon Cummings of Silvertown All Stars while Delon Brewster of Victory Valley Erosion copped the most goal scorer award.
The activities were sponsored by Lindenguy.com who donated the trophies and medals for the events. The launching of the foundation was graced with the presence of the Mayor Stan Smith, Abdul Kadir and other community Leaders. According to the directors, the foundation has lots of plans for 2003 and Sunday was just the beginning.
