Rose Fung of Belair Gardens is, at 104, the oldest living Chinese woman in Guyana.

Marjorie Kirkpatrick, co-ordinator of tomorrow's 150th anniversary celebration of the arrival of Chinese in Guyana, had identified Rose who was born on December 13, 1898.

The mother of four had been living in Canada for 24 years but returned to Guyana in 2001 declaring that she had missed the country of her birth.

Rose attributes her longevity to a life of moderation. She always abstained from smoking and drinking and has never suffered any major ailment although she is partially deaf, a condition she described as hereditary.

She eats pretty much anything but always in small amounts. The only exception is meat, which she stopped eating years ago. Rose confessed she does not speak a word of Chinese but embraces the culture and has lived by some of its values and beliefs.
