A souvenir brochure was launched at the National Library on Monday to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Chinese in Guyana.
The brochure, Guyanese-Chinese Heritage, was prepared by Marlene Crawford and Rosemarie Choo-Shee-Nam and is a brief history of the Chinese since their arrival in 1853.
Choo-Shee-Nam said at the launching that the brochure recorded activities which have shaped the life of the Chinese people. She noted that a great deal of Chinese history was destroyed when a fire struck the Chinese Association in 1982. Choo-Shee-Nam noted that records, photographs and documentation were all destroyed.
Former First Lady, Viola Burnham who is of Chinese ancestry described the brochure as a beginning, an advancement in Guyanese history.
According to Mrs. Burnham more can be said, reasoned and researched about Chinese history in Guyana.
The committee presented the Ministry of Education and the National Library with copies of the brochure.
