A fleet of heavy tactical troop transport and cargo trucks, expected to enhance the capability of the army in ensuring Guyana's national security and defence, was yesterday officially handed over to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
United States Ambassador to Guyana Ronald Godard handed over thirty trucks and three trailers acquired through the US Foreign Military Financing Programme.
The Foreign Military Financing Programme, Godard said, provides grants to allies of the US for the acquisition of US military equipment and training.
According to the Secretary to the Defence Board, Dr Roger Luncheon, the equipment was firm evidence of the existence of an enduring relationship between the Governments of Guyana and the US.
The total fleet, which includes 29 used trucks from the US Excess Defence Article stocks and six new trucks, were acquired at a cost of US$380,000, at a discounted price. The trucks are of five-tonne capacity. Thirty trucks have arrived in Guyana while five are to be delivered. Accessories were also provided including a supply of spare parts. A plan to continue access to spare parts for the vehicles is nearing completion, Ambassador Godard said.
Apart from financing the acquisition, funding was also provided for the training of fifteen mechanics and seven drivers who completed a Heavy Duty Truck Operator's Course which began on January 3rd.
According to a GDF press release, the course was designed to provide local army mechanics with the knowledge and skills required to repair and remedy faults on the vehicles.
