The Guyana Association of Bankers has announced that Friday banking hours will now run from 8 am to 2:30 pm, thereby eliminating the second afternoon shift.

The decision, effective this Friday, was made at the Association’s last meeting and advertised in the newspapers. Speaking with Stabroek News yesterday, Chairman of the Guyana Association of Bankers, Farried Sulliman, said the decision was made because bank employees were typically forced to go home late at night on Fridays, when many banks opened until 5 pm. He explained that after the banks close their doors there was still a lot of work to be done and as a result employees go home very late. He said the decision was made given the availability of Automatic Teller Machines and the fact that the change does not significantly reduce the number of banking hours.

Banks which have undertaken to comply with the new 8 am - 2.30 pm schedule include: The Bank of Baroda (Guyana) Inc (previously 8 am - 12:30 pm and 3 pm - 5 pm), Citizen’s Bank Guyana Inc (previously 8 am - 4.30 pm), Demerara Bank Limited (previously 8 am - 4:30 pm), the Guyana Bank for Trade Industry (previously 8 am - 12:30 pm and 3 pm - 5 pm), the Guyana National Co-operative Bank (previously 8 am - 12:30 pm and 3 pm - 5 pm), the National Bank of Industry and Commerce (previously 8 am - 1 pm and 3 pm - 5 pm), and the Bank of Nova Scotia (previously 8 am - 1 pm and 3 pm - 5 pm).
