The National Finals of the Children's Mashramani Competition got underway yesterday at the National Cultural Centre and the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Competitions which included physical display, dramatic poetry, costume and calypso were staged simultaneously since the start of the finals were set back by a day due to Eid-ul-Adha observances on Wednesday.
The calypso and dramatic poetry competitions kicked off at the National Cultural Centre while the costume and physical competitions were held at the National Sports Hall.
The dramatic poetry competition saw creative and expressive pieces while the calypso segment raised numerous appeals for a better Guyana. Students through both song and poetry expressed their feelings about the current crime situation. Their lyrics dealt at length with the February 23, 2002 jail-break, innocent slayings, guns, the police force and the government.
Costumes on display showed originality and creativity and depicted unity, peace, culture and love. However the majority focused on the theme "United are we in 2003".
The Georgetown district conceded defeat in almost every competition it contested. The lone winners for Georgetown were the Marian Academy, West Ruimveldt Primary, St. Stephens Primary and Richard Ishmael Secondary.
The Region Ten district emerged tops in the physical display competitions which included pyramids and combinations while Regions Six and Seven dominated the costume competition. Region Ten also won the calypso competition. The dramatic poetry top honours were shared by Region Six and Georgetown.
The dance and masquerade competitions get underway today at the National Park.
