Minister of Agriculture Navin Chandarpal says he wishes that “we can have the type of unity, the type of harmony which is observed every time there are activities in Region Two,” everywhere in Guyana.
Chandarpal was at the time delivering his feature address to thousands of Region Two residents who converged at the Anna Regina Community Centre ground on Saturday night for the flag raising ceremony marking the 33rd Anniversary of the Republic,
Chandarpal asserted that Region Two continues to “show the example for other parts of the country to take,” adding that the Region was “giving true meaning to the theme of United are we in 2003.”
The minister said that there was no other road for Guyanese in the light of many external enemies, so “we must not increase the pressures on ourselves by having enemies within.”
Noting that Guyanese had come a long way since February 23, 1970 when the country became a republic, he urged that the gains achieved over thirty years should be preserved. According to Chandarpal, despite many difficulties both internally and externally, Guyana is on the road to success and for this the nation should be proud.
On entering the ground the minister, accompanied by Regional Chairman Ali Baksh, inspected a guard of honour mounted by ranks of the police force in “G” division.
After the minister’s address there were a number of cultural items including songs, poems, skits, calypsos and dances by the New Opportunity Corps, the C.V. Nunes Primary School, the Suddie Primary School, Mainstay Lake Youth Group, Anna Regina Multilateral School and the Cotton Field Secondary School.
Prayers were then said by representatives of the Christian, Hindu and Muslim faiths after which the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted by a rank of the Disciplined Services. This was followed by the reciting of the National Pledge and singing of the first verse of the National Anthem.
