Mrs. Ingrid Fung
Headmistress of St. Joseph’s High: “I’ve known Yohance for more than five years, taught him for two years and he was an excellent child. Since he died, I’ve been trying to find what flaw I could find in his character. I could find none. Except, maybe for the fact that he was playful and any moment he could get his team to play basketball he would, He graduated in 2001 with a distinction. St.Joseph’s is extremely saddened at his passing, the teachers and students blend their hearts and tears in their cry to society and at this time, justice must prevail.”
Robert Bourne
President of the University of Guyana Student’s Society: “Yohance was a quiet, decent boy who was very childish. I wouldn’t even call him a man, as he was so childish. I am mad about the way in which he died. It has serious repercussions, as the police are telling young people that they cannot move as they like and they are impeding their freedom. What happened today in the protest is a very good sign that young people are saying that they are not going to take it any more. The fact that parents are sending their children out to protest, says a lot. We recognise that this incident represents a larger picture of extra judicial killings and we want a full inquiry into the matter.”
Ayesha Archer
Technology student, University of Guyana: “I knew Yohance for about two years now. He was finishing his diploma.
We played basketball together. He recently played in a tournament which U.G won at the Sports Hall. He was a quiet and easy going person. Everytime we met he would ask how I was and he would never pass anyone straight. When he was not playing basketball, he was with his classmates or his girlfriend Andrea. When you saw him, you saw Andrea.”
Kurt Elias
Colts Pacesetters team member and friend: “I had a good friendly relationship with Yohance as he was a very disciplined individual and we used to get along well. Basically, the killing could
have been anybody as we all trained together playing basketball on different courts. I usually train in the morning individually by running on the seawall. It could have been me because I could have been getting a lift from somebody coming from training. It was bad as it was such a fatal shooting. My condolences go out to his parents, close friends and to Guyanese sports people in general.”
Cristy Campbell
St.Joseph’s High class mate:
“Yohance was never really a wicked child. He just had the usual childhood characteristics. We were in the same house at school for five years and four out of those years, we led our house to victory at sports. We did track together. He surprised everyone with his grades at CXC as he was always involved in sports like cricket, basketball and athletics. I could stand out and put my head on a block that Yohance was not a criminal.”
