Yohance Douglas, who was shot by the police on March 1, will be laid to rest at the Roman Catholic Beterverwagting Cemetery today.

Family members yesterday confirmed that the young man, whom many described as `a fallen hero' will be buried today.

The body will be at the Merriman's Funeral Home from 10:30am to 11:15am for viewing, and after that it will be at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Brickdam, from 1:00pm. The funeral service will begin at 3:00pm.

Yohance was in a car with four other youths - Ranson Gray, who was shot in the mouth, O'Neil King, who was shot in the hand, Randolph Gregory Goodluck and Quacy Heywood - when policemen opened fire on them at the corner of Sheriff and Bonasika streets.

The youths, all of whom are basketball players, had gone to a friend's home on Sheriff street, and on their return had stopped at the junction with Bonasika to see whether the lesson, which Grey's sister was attending, was over. It was while driving off after concluding that the lesson was still in session that they came under attack. One of the youths had reported that they saw the vehicle pull up alongside them and observed the men telling them something but they could not hear since they had the music up loud. He said that the men drew guns and Grey, who was the driver of the car, begged them not to shoot, but mere seconds after that shots were fired.

Since the youth's death there has been a public outcry, and the University of Guyana has marched for five days in succession in protest.

Douglas was an architecture student at the university, while Grey is an international relations student. Vigils have also been held at the corner where Douglas died.

The police have launched an investigation into the shooting, the findings of which are expected to be made public on Tuesday.
