President Bharrat Jagdeo on Sunday, hailing the extensive legacy of the late Dr Cheddi Jagan, declared that the ideas of the former president of Guyana kept him alive today because they were being implemented.

President Jagdeo was addressing hundreds who had assembled at the Babu John Crematorium, Port Mourant, Corentyne, where Jagan's last remains were cremated under Hindu rites six years ago, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.

At this sixth Memorial Service for the former Guyana head-of-state, GINA quoted Jagdeo as saying in his tribute to Cheddi Jagan: "He hated racism. He avoided extremism and in every action that he took, one could discern fairness."

Wreaths were laid at the site in remembrance, including those by President Jagdeo, Prime Minister Sam Hinds and his wife Yvonne Hinds, General Secretary of the PPP/Civic Donald Ramotar, other members of the party and the regional administration.

President Jagdeo also saluted the late Dr Jagan for teaching the party to portray political pluralism and to be nationalist regardless of race and religion. The path initially set for a multi-ethnic Guyana by Dr Jagan had not changed and the party remained committed to enhancing the means of pursuing this goal, however difficult the task, GINA reported.

Dr Jagan was a person of great capacity who mixed with many heads of government and others in very important positions, but he never lost the common touch, the President said.

According to GINA, Jagdeo also observed that every utterance of Dr Jagan always reflected concern about his people, his country and his party.

The Guyanese leader said that the PPP created by Dr Jagan had always prioritized the needs of the working class and to date this had not changed. However, GINA said that the President noted that the PPP had never opposed enterprises but rather it had created an environment conducive to the business community, and had even managed to record the greatest strides in the business sector under its regime.
