The University of Guyana Students' Society (UGSS) is expected to form a "broad-based committee" to fight against the crime situation in Guyana, according to its president, Robert Bourne.
Bourne yesterday told Stabroek News that they had scheduled a meeting for yesterday evening and had invited a number of persons including representatives from political parties, religious organisations and youth groups.
He said they would be seeking to have representatives from all these groups and parties on the committee to fight the crime situation. The UGSS last week was involved in a week-long protest against the gunning down of UG student Yohance Douglas by the police on March 1.
In a press release earlier, the UGSS said that as a result of Douglas's death and the wounding of another student, Ronson Gray, they had begun to be actively involved in the sustained campaign not only to bring the murderers of Douglas to justice, but to end the violence that was destroying the country's future.
"We therefore intend to approach groups which have been fighting against extra-judicial killings, police brutality, violence by civilians against civilians, individuals, families and communities, in the hope that together, we can build a broad-based movement against violence," the release stated.
It also admitted that the UGSS had not been actively involved in the struggle to end murderous violence in the country until the death of Douglas, but added that they were involved now and "we will stay involved until we win."
