The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is calling upon the PNCR Leader, Robert Corbin to retract statements he made on Monday relating to the murder of Yohance Douglas, or else provide evidence.
A GPF release described the statements made on Channel Nine as "ridiculous and unfortunate, coming from a person who should know better" and pointed out that Corbin's utterances "certainly do not, in any way, contribute to the peace and tranquillity of society."
The release quoted Corbin as saying, "...not all the persons involved in the murder of Yohance Douglas were regular policemen...these squads are paid a bounty of $300,000 for every killing of persons."
The police said that if Corbin knew they were not members of the force, "then he should provide the evidence." The GPF "do not and have never engaged in the employment of bounty hunters, neither is anyone being paid to kill any person(s). This is a clear case of a person making groundless statements without considering the implications of such malicious uttering."
It stated that Corbin took pains to stress the alleged intimidating behaviour of members of the force who had passed around the homes of Yohance Douglas and Ronson Grey and made, as he claimed, menacing gestures.
"We deny these allegations. There is no need for ranks to target these homes. In fact, no one from those homes has reported that he or she was subjected to any intimidatory conduct by members of the force," the release said.
"The force does not wish to engage in a response that is belabouring and we insist that Corbin's utterings are nothing short of attempting to cause disaffection among members of the force and the public."
