Critchlow Labour College (CLC) Advisor, Dr Harold Lutchman saw recently deceased trade union icon Joseph Henry Pollydore as being largely self made.

"His well-deserved reputation for greatness was earned through years of sacrifice and hard work," Lutchman said during a tribute to the fallen unionist at his funeral service on Saturday.

Lutchman, who for many years had been closely associated with Pollydore, especially in respect to education in the movement, said the late trade unionist had early in his life recognised the importance of education to his personal development which he pursued unrelentingly.

`Polly' according to Lutchman, always emphasized education as a potent instrument capable of providing answers to the problems of workers and their organisations.

Due to this thrust, he was prominently involved in the founding of the CLC and for years after had served as secretary to its board of governors.

Lutchman further related that Pollydore saw labour education as much more than equipping persons to strike, rather he saw it as multi-dimensional with others outside of trade unionists and the movement likely to make contributions.

Using Pollydore's life as a beacon, Lutchman said it should inspire students in general and those at CLC in particular, to greater effort in their quest for success in their studies and in later life.

According to Lutchman `Polly' had shown a burning ambition and determination to make a success of his life and thus was prepared to devote the time and energy to achieving goals and objectives. He never allowed difficulties, obstacles and hindrances, though they may have been aplenty, to frustrate his efforts at realising his dreams.
