Guyana's Aliann Pompey will start her quest for a gold this afternoon at 13:10hrs when she participates in Round One of the Women's 400 metres event at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England.
Should the Commonwealth gold medalist live up to expectations, her next race is scheduled for tomorrow 5:30 pm when she would run in the 400 metres semi-final.
The finals of the 400m is scheduled for Sunday at 2:50 pm.
The U.K indoor Women's 400m record is 50.53 seconds which was set by Katherine Merry in 1999, and Pompey's personal best time in the 400m is 52.17 seconds.
Pompey beat Jearl Miles-Clark in the 500 with a time of 1:10:06 at the New Balance Games at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York on January 25. She was captain of Guyana's 2000 Olympic team and made the quarterfinals in the 400.
Pompey was the 2001 NCAA Indoor 400 meter champ while at Manhattan College and was recently honoured as Guyana's 2002 Female Athlete of the Year by the Guyana Olympic Association.
In her most recent track meet, the Athina 2003 track meet in Athens Greece, she was only able to manage 52.80 seconds, well below her national record of 52.17 seconds.
That time, earned her fourth place in the meet therefore for Pompey to earn a gold, or even be among the medalists in England, she would have to work very hard.
