Government is committed to resolving constructively through dialogue, issues arising out of recent actions by the Surinamese administration in relation to the border dispute.

Government’s attention had been drawn to the New River Triangle issue as a result of Suriname’s efforts to issue maps of its country with the disputed area included, and its recent request for missions and other international organisations in Paramaribo to recognise the area as part of Suriname.

Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon told media personnel yesterday, that Minister of Foreign Affairs Rudolph Insanally, had lodged a protest note to the Suriname government and was waiting for a response.

According to Luncheon, cabinet at its Monday sitting had been briefed about recent developments in relations between the two nations as well as on details concerning the protest note.

The minister, Luncheon further said, had highlighted the reaction of the Guyanese administration to the Surinamese provocation, indicating that the Guyana position which was publicised fully and was simply put, utterly rejected attempts by Suriname to engage in forms of territorial aggression.

The minister, it was further said, attested to the fact that the New River Triangle was part of Guyana’s territory.

“Cabinet in consideration of the various factors was heartened that the climate at the currently ongoing border commission meeting was conducive to the continued discussions, and efforts must now be made to reduce the fallout from the actions taken by the Surinamese and to proceed to have a constructive approach to the border difficulty that faces the two nations.”
