The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says it doubts that the likely war led by the United States against Iraq “will make the world more stable and safe.”

“Indeed the very opposite could result,” the ruling party contended in a release yesterday.

And even at this eleventh hour, the PPP is urging the US and its allies to withdraw from the brink and allow the inspectors to continue working to disarm Iraq, the release stated.

According to the PPP, many are convinced that the rise of terrorism is linked to the unsolved problems in the Middle East where the Arab population feels discriminated by the West.

The party further said that it is a matter of concern that Israel has ignored many of the UN’s resolutions without having to face the military might of the US and its allies.

The PPP has also expressed “deep sadness and regret” that the United States and its military allies seem determined to go to war with Iraq, adding that war is an extreme measure and those that suffer the most are innocent civilians and ordinary working people.

The party is of the view that “the war is being pushed at a time when the work of the inspection team has been making the acknowledged progress,” noting that even the day before the inspectors were forced to leave, they have been involved in destroying missiles.

In addition, the PPP said, experts on Iraq have been saying that the Iraqi regime does not have the capacity to develop nuclear weapons as that capability was already destroyed since the last Gulf war.
