Chief Justice Carl Singh yesterday ordered that an interim management committee be appointed to administer the Shaheed (Sad’r) Boys and Girls orphanages, pending the determination of a matter between the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana and the administrators of the institution.
The decision came after the CIOG, through attorneys Rex McKay, SC., Moenudin Mohamed McDoom, SC., and Moenudin Mohamed McDoom Jnr, moved to the High Court against the Guyana United Sad’r Islamic Anjuman, which is presently responsible for the management of the institution.
Other defendants in the litigation include both orphanages, Abdool Shamshudeen Rahaman, Hafiz Rahaman, Mohamed Yacoob Hussain, Nazir Hamid and Raheema Rahaman also known as Dolly Yasin.
The committee comprises Mujtaba Nasir, McDoom Jnr, Shalimar Ali-Hack, Shiraz Osman Ali, as well as Rahaman and Houssain. The hearing and determination of the action has been adjourned to May 12.
The CIOG’s legal action follows the recent discovery by the Ministry of Human Services of mismanagement which has resulted in charges of child abuse and child labour at the orphanage. And the litigation also comes in the wake of the murder of a 14-year-old resident of the Boys Orphanage, for whose death, two persons including the acting Chief Executive Officer of the orphanage, have been charged.
