Athletes shortlisted to represent Guyana at the Junior Carifta Games will be on show today at the New Amsterdam Track Club's (NATC) Open Invitational Meet, scheduled for the Rose Hall Canje ground.
While the athletes short-listed will be seeking to make the Junior Carifta team, others will be looking to turn in performances that could garner them a place at the Whitsuntide Games, scheduled for Grenada over the Easter weekend.
One athlete, Cleveland Forde, who was short-listed for the Junior Carifta Games, but not included in the list that was circulated by the Amateur Athletic Association of Guyana (AAA) to media houses, is expected to run the race of his life in order to make the Carifta team.
According to an AAA release, Forde the defending Carifta 5000-metre champion, did not participate in the National Athletic Champion-ship staged at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground last month, and for him or the other short-listed athletes to gain selection, they would have to compete at today's meet and, based on their performance and available funds, could be selected.
The AAA release had also stated that Forde would have to undergo a medical examination.
With this in mind, track and field fans can expect some keen rivalry at the Rose Hall ground.
The athletes short-listed are; (Girls U-17) Dianne Munroe and Asanti Mickle (100m, 200m), Serma Mentore (400m), Donna April (800m) and Jennifer Chichester (1500m, 3000m). (Boys U-17) Quacy Trotman and Delmas Reddock (100m 200m), Rodwell Downer (800m, 1500m), Ricky Kissoon (3000m), Ronald Payne (shot putt) and Fillion Thompson (javelin). (Girls U-20) Ashanti Scott (1500m). (Boys U-20) Royston Ross and Cleon Washington (shot putt and discus).
The local team is scheduled to depart for Trinidad on April 17 for the Games which is slated for April 19 to 21.
