Republic Bank appoints first woman to board in 17 years

Republic Bank Limited has announced the appointment of Dr. Marjorie Thorpe to its Board of Directors with effect from April 1.

A release from King Advertising Limited stated that Dr. Thorpe, a current member of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Commission, is the first woman to be appointed to the Republic Bank Board of Directors in 17 years.

She has served on the faculty of the University of the West Indies for some 20 years before being named Trinidad and Tobago’s Ambassador and Permanent Representa-tive to the United Nations, New York in 1988.

The release also noted that Dr Thorpe brings to the board her experience as an educator and a development practitioner with a strong interest in gender issues.

She was part of the team that spearheaded the introduction of Women and Development Studies at the UWI and has served as the coordinator of the programme at the St. Augustine campus.

A recipient of various fellowships and awards, Dr. Thorpe’s tenure of office at UWI included appointments as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Arts and General Studies and University Dean, Arts and General Degrees, the release added.
