142 murders in 2002
58 killed for first three months of this year

The number of murders reported to the police rose by 56.3% in 2002 over the previous year. But the number of murders up to the end of last month is more than triple the figure for the same period last year. There have been 58 murders in the first three months of 2003 compared to 17 in 2002.
Commissioner of Police (ag) Floyd McDonald disclosed these statistics when he addressed the opening session of the Annual Police Conference on Thursday at the Police Officers' Mess, Eve Leary.
He said that of the fifty-eight persons, who include eight policemen, killed so far this year, 13 were killed as a result of robberies compared with one for the same period last year.
With regard to the previous year, McDonald said that 142 persons were killed in 2002 compared to 79 in 2001.
McDonald said for last year 20 people died in the course of robberies as against 2001 when 11 of the 79 persons killed met their deaths as a result of robberies.
