The Commander of the Police ‘B’ Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul Slowe, has been relieved of his command.

Stabroek News understands that he has been asked to report to the Commissioner of Police for re-assignment.

Slowe ran into difficulties when he refused to apologise for disobeying an order given to him by Home Affairs Minister, Ronald Gajraj, to return a firearm taken from a Rosignol businessman during an investigation of a shooting at the man’s residence in which his son was injured.

A Ministry of Home Affairs official told Stabroek News that Gajraj had ordered the gun returned after ballistics tests had indicated that the gun was not the one fired during the incident. The gun was subsequently returned on the written instructions of Police Commissioner(ag), Floyd McDonald.

Stabroek News understands that President Bharrat Jagdeo had also intervened to get Slowe to apologise to Gajraj, which he undertook to do once he was informed in writing what infraction he had committed.

The incident was the second involving Slowe and Gajraj. The first occurred in 2001 and then Commissioner of Police, Laurie Lewis reportedly took the matter up with President Jagdeo and the matter was eventually dropped.
