The Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) organised its first Grand Mela and Family Fun Day at the Everest Cricket Ground last Sunday as part of its observance of the 165th anniversary of the arrival of East Indians in Guyana and reported widespread support with an estimate of over 10,000 persons in attendance, in spite of inclement weather.

The IAC is a non-governmental and non-profit body seeking to promote Indian culture and celebrate its achievements in the context of a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society, a release informed. The theme of the IAC’s observance is: “Indo-Guyanese and National Unity”.

The IAC release expressed appreciation that President Bharrat Jagdeo attended the event and delivered a message on the occasion. Brief messages were also delivered by PPP General Secretary Donald Ramotar, PNCR Vice Chairman Vincent Alexander, TUF’s deputy leader Michael Abraham and WPA’s MP Sheila Holder. The IAC noted that it had also invited leader of ROAR Ravi Dev but his party was not represented at the event, which is now planned to be an annual feature.
