As police continue their search for two men implicated in Monday's murder of Police Constable Lloyd Cameron, one man who was held while fleeing the scene remains in police custody.
Constable Cameron, 23, of Lot 78 Plum Park, South Sophia was attached to the Criminal Investigation Department, Eve Leary. He was shot dead near the path behind the Sophia Practical Instruction Centre as he and another officer, who is believed to have been the real target, were leaving for work.
Following the shooting, one man was held by police after being pointed out by eyewitnesses. His accomplices managed to elude detection.
Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent David Ramnarine, confirmed yesterday that the man was still in custody.
Cameron is the third policeman to be killed in Sophia, where Constables Colin Roberts, on December 23 and Deon Joseph, on January 30 lost their lives in similar circumstances.
Over the last 13 months, policemen have been deliberately targeted by gunmen. In addition to the 21 killed to date, numerous attempts have been made on the lives of other ranks.
On Saturday an off-duty policeman was under surveillance by several men who subsequently engaged ranks in a shoot-out in Lodge after their activities had come to the attention of the police. The two men who were tracking the movements of the policeman escaped.
