The police traffic department is apparently satisfied with drivers’ response to the compulsory use of seatbelt in the front seats of all vehicles.
The department is estimating that about 80% of motorists are obeying the new laws, which they see as a good response bearing in mind that the grace period for allowing full compliance is still on.
Acting Chief Traffic Officer, Superintendent Michael Harlequin said that the department would be continuing to monitor seatbelt use to ensure total compliance.
The seatbelt law became enforceable on January 1 but since then police have instituted a grace period to allow full compliance since some vehicles due to age or model did not have this feature.
During this period drivers have been stopped and cautioned by police ranks who have yet to begin charging persons for non-compliance.
The traffic officer was not in a position to say how long the ongoing grace period was expected to last.
