Christopher `Shaka' Henry's recent win over a Jamaican opponent is being labeled a victory against a tomato can by Maurice `Bizzy' Bocye, trainer of local junior middleweight `Deadly' Denny Dalton.
In an exclusive interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday Boyce cautioned Guyanese not to lose sleep over Henry's latest success since the opponent was hand-picked and tailor-made for the knockout.
"That's the only way that he would take the fight so close to fighting us. Henry was probably ring rusty and took the fight after being guaranteed a victory," Boyce said.
Dalton meets Henry in the main bout on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on a card organised by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control. Last Satnurday, one week before he was scheduled to meet Dalton, Henry knocked out Jamaican Earl `Boom Boom' Foskin in Barbados. The victory is the Barbados based St Lucian boxer's 15th in a career that spans 20 fights.
"I have been in the corner five times when world titles were at stake. I know this business. Henry fought some hand-picked fighter. On Saturday it will be Denny Dalton," the local boxing technician said.
"I think that he needed some work so he took the fight knowing very well that he would whip the tomato can. In Guyana he will have real work. We will work on him," Boyce promised.
"We are no way deterred by what he did in Barbados. It is a big win for him but not on our card. We are not worried by such trifles," the experienced trainer explained.
Henry and his entourage are expected in Guyana tomorrow. According to Boyce his charge has no problem making the "weight" and the trainer again promised that Dalton will be in perfect shape on Saturday.
Boyce declared that a total of 150 rounds of glove work has been done in preparation for Henry. We will end sparring today (yesterday) and will be working on pads, centre ball and side ball from then on," Boyce stated.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Boxing Board of Control has added another fight to Saturday's card. Undefeated featherweight Leon Moore will take on Linden Arthur in a six-rounder.
Moore, who trains under the eye of Donald Allison at the recently reopened Ricola Gym in Agricola, has knocked out all three opponents since joining the professional ranks last year.
Female light heavyweight Gwendolyn `The Stealth Bomber' O'Neil will have her third try against Margaret `Chico' Walcott in the main supporting bout. At stake is the light heavyweight title of Guyana.
O'Neil won the first meeting between the two while the second was adjudged a draw.
Dexter Breedy, who was scheduled to have a return match against Earl Deane will now meet Shawn Holder in an eight round lightweight contest. Breedy is also under the eye of Allison.
In the other fight on the card involving females Cherly Greaves takes on Shelly Gibson in a four round heavyweight encounter. Cecil `Koker Dog' Alfred collides with Dennis Mackenzie in the only fight for persons over 40 years old.
A press conference will be held on Friday morning at the Water Chris Hotel. The press conference starts at 10 am.
