The three ranks implicated in the discovery of some 75 pounds of marijuana aboard the army's flagship, 'GDFS Essequibo' are still under close arrest at the army's Coast Guard Base as investigations continue.

Both the police and army are investigating the matter, a senior police source said yesterday, since the prohibited substance was planted on the vessel while it was in Guyana.

The ship had sailed to Barbados two Sundays ago to participate in the Coast Guard phase of the annual Exercise Tradewinds, but it was recalled last Wednesday morning, one day after docking in Barbados.

One Coast Guard rank, who flew to the Caribbean island while being absent without leave, was intercepted as he tried to board the vessel. He revealed the presence of the ganja on the ship after being questioned. He subsequently implicated two other ranks who had sailed with the vessel to Barbados.

Army sources said the Board of Inquiry which was launched after the discovery is expected to complete its work by Friday.
