Well done GBBC

Saturday's Independence boxing card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall came like a breath of fresh air. Guyanese again walked away from a card feeling satisfied that they had their money's worth.
The organisers, the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, who almost had a capacity crowd at the Sports Hall, should be applauded for putting together something that would rival any in the days of yore.
The board came to the rescue a few years ago at a time when professional boxing in Guyana seemed on it's last lap. Cards were held with a handful of spectators in attendance.
Even die hards had grown tired and were staying away. They were fed up with the `tomato cans' who would come here only to lay flat on the canvas following a sub standard performance.
In addition the sport suffered from a lack of sponsorship which put promoters on the ropes. Cards then became few and far between.
Entered K.D. Persaud, Trevor Arno, Andrew Thorne, Ian Alves and others. By putting their shoulders to the wheel the members of the GBBC have returned professional boxing from the wilderness and on the road to success.
And although there are still some rough edges, the general feeling is that the name GBBC has become synonymous with quality fights.
The crowds tell the story that once again fans are confident that the sport has returned to the days when they were guaranteed a good show.
The onus is now on the GBBC and the other promoters who are bound to come out after witnessing the turn around, to make sure that the standards are kept. The GBBC has indeed done a good job. Onward to even better days. (Steve Ninvalle)
