Three soldiers implicated in the discovery of 75 pounds of marijuana aboard the army's flagship, 'GDFS Essequibo', are expected to be handed over to the police tomorrow at the latest.
According to an army source, the President of the GDF's Board of Inquiry had completed the report and was expected to hand it over to the Chief of Staff and the second in command.
The inquiry was held to find out how the smuggling was carried out and what corrective measures could be put in place to prevent any recurrence.
The ship had sailed to Barbados on May 4 to participate in the Coast Guard phase of the annual Exercise Trade-winds, but it was recalled last Wednesday morning, one day after docking in Barbados.
A Coast Guard rank had flown to the island while being absent without leave and was intercepted as he tried to board the vessel. He revealed the presence of the ganja on the ship after being questioned. He subsequently implicated two other ranks who had sailed with the vessel.
He had also called the name of a Kitty resident who had travelled to Barbados and stayed at the same hotel as he did and according to the army source the man is still in Barbados. The information has been passed on to the Barbadian authorities who are assisting in the investigation.
