The Women's Progressive Organisation (WPO), in celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, has resolved to continue the process of ensuring a greater role for women in the country's democracy.
According to a WPO press statement, the last fifty years saw the creation, consolidation and growth of the organisation, which is the women's arm of the PPP/C.
The next fifty years, the statement added, would see the continuous growth, expansion, development and activism of the WPO.
"We will continue steadfastly in the direction we have chosen in furthering the process of liberating women from the shackles of ignorance, domination and backwardness and for a greater role in the ever-widening democracy being built in our country," the statement said.
The WPO singled out former President of Guyana, Janet Jagan, one of the founding members of the WPO for her "unwavering and unstinting contributions to the organisation".
