Authorities in Charleston, South Carolina, USA are trying to ascertain the identity of man who has no memory of his past and may be a native of an English-speaking Caribbean country.

According to a report published in the Charleston-based newspaper The Post and Courier, the man who is now known as ‘Nigel Smith,’ is being treated at the St Francis Behavioral Med unit, for a rare form of psychogenic amnesia, a psychological memory disorder which is often triggered by emotional trauma.

On June 16, 2002, Smith, a middle-aged man, awoke on the side of a Baltimore, Maryland road with no memory.

After four months of treatment he headed south to Charleston where he attempted suicide. He is now being treated for depression and amnesia at the Bon Secours St Francis Hospital. The only clues Smith has provided to his identity are images induced under hypnosis. He has seen images of kites flying on Easter Monday and his accent is said to be possibly of Caribbean origin. Smith, who may be Roman Catholic, also remembers the names Trevor Lowe and Ernest Batiste and believes he has a daughter named Stacey. The article says the man has a slight British accent, is highly intelligent and treats everyone with a cordiality that suggests a formal upbringing.
