Asphyxiation has been cited as the cause of death of the two Shaheed Girls’ Orphanage children who drowned after falling into the Industry Sideline Canal on Thursday afternoon.

A post-mortem carried out on nine and ten-year-old Yasmin and Ravina Singh yesterday morning confirmed that the girls’ deaths were not a result of foul play.

Yasmin and Ravina, both pupils of Graham’s Hall Primary School in Industry, were returning to classes from lunch at the orphanage when the tragedy occurred.

Reports state that Ravina went to wash her feet in the canal, had fallen in and her best friend had gone under trying to rescue her.

The Interim Management Committee (IMC) in charge of the Oleander Gardens orphanage, in a press release, expressed deep grief at the death of the girls.

In the release it noted that it was appointed on March 31 to manage the affairs of the orphanage and at the time there was only one housekeeper to care for 29 children. The IMC said it hired two others to adequately care for the children.
